How Long Should Your Next Home-Improvement Project Take?

October 07, 2016

No matter what your next project may be, it’s important to know how much time to allot for the whole process. From preparation to installation and everything in between, having a good timeline to base your schedule off of will set your project up for success from start to finish.

Here are some general guidelines for how long your projects should take:

Window Installation
Estimated Time: 4 – 7 Hours per Window

Window installation can be a very time-sensitive task. You need to move quickly to prevent outside debris, creatures and other elements from infiltrating your household. That’s why it’s important to set aside enough time to install each window in a safe, efficient and swift manner.
There are, however, several factors that contribute to the length of time it will take to get the job done. These include:

  • The number of old windows to remove and new windows to install
  • The size of the windows
  • The amount of available manpower
  • The floor that the windows are on
  • The amount of trim and cleanup work required
  • How quickly you can obtain the proper permit required in your area
  • How quickly it takes for you to understand the product installation guide

A single window installation on the ground floor can take between four and six hours, and between five and seven hours for installation on an upper floor.

Home Door Installation
Estimated Time: 2 – 3 Hours per Home Door

Although it used to be that installing a home door was an extremely challenging task, pre-hung doors have made the process much quicker and easier.
Similar to home doors, here are some factors that contribute to the length of time it will take to get this job done:

  • The number of old doors to remove and new doors to install
  • The size of the doors
  • The amount of available manpower
  • The amount of trim and cleanup work required
  • How quickly you can obtain the proper permit required in your area
  • How quickly it takes for you to understand the product installation guide

Roofing Installation
Estimated Time: 1 – 3 Days

Installing a roof can take significantly more time than other home-improvement projects. Based on the size of the project, it can take between one to several days to successfully complete. Here are some of the main factors that contribute to completing the job in a timely manner or not:

  • The weather
  • The size of your home’s roof
  • The amount of prep time needed (removing debris, preparing the surface beneath the shingles, etc.)
  • The amount of available manpower
  • The amount of cleanup work required
  • How quickly you can obtain the proper permit required in your area
  • How quickly it takes for you to understand the product installation guide

Trim and Moulding Installation
Estimated Time: 1 – 2 Hours Per Room

Moulding installation is typically a quick and easy process, even for those who are completing it for the first time. Here are some factors that can contribute to how long your installation may take:

  • The size of the space
  • How many angles the room has
  • How many different sizes of moulding must be cut
  • How long it takes to locate the wood studs in your walls
  • The amount of available manpower
  • If finishing touches (painting, staining, etc.) are required
  • The amount of cleanup work required
